Hacking GoPro HERO5 — Part i

I boot off this blog with an entry regarding the newest activeness camera from GoPro, in this weblog I will post about GoPro stuff (duh), security analysis, android development stuff, things I make, wearable and IoT stuff and some random talk. For those uninitiated, I am all of that, sort of.

Exploring GoPro HERO5

GoPro released their new action camera(s) recently, and I am eager to play with i. Meanwhile, the first firmware for HERO5 Black and Session has been released so I went to poke for a bit.

I have done these kind of contrary engineering in the past to get the GoPro API updated, the new HERO5 photographic camera has a new URL to start streaming, equally of FW 01.20 the URL is:

/gp/gpControl/execute?p1=gpStream\u0026c1=restart which is /gp/gpControl/execute?p1=gpStream&c1=restart

UDP 8554 stream is the same. The HERO5 Black runs on the Ambarella A9SE chip, I played around with a camera that also had a A9SE (only not able to talk virtually) and it supports conditional statements in ambarella shell scripting.

Autonomously from the usual commands I will cut to the new interesting things: seems you tin can throw any .ash file in the SD bill of fare, doesn't need to be named "autoexec.ash". Unsure if information technology will actually run the file, but its worth a try.

WiFi connectivity, GPS, all command have been updated to support these new features. Now onto the surprise.

GoPro has ever somehow left a bit of the "ane more thing" accidentally in their software, like they "accidentally left" a pic of Karma in their GoPro Care website or a UI mockup video in their android app. In this firmware, the software identified more cameras than HERO5 Blackness and HERO5 Session, enter HERO5 Superbank and HERO5 Silver.

HERO5 Superbank and HERO5 Silver:

Throughout the HERO5 Black firmware in that location are references to HERO5 Silver and HERO5 Superbank.
HERO5 Superbank is a Camera! It has the same specs as the HERO5 Black and its probably closer to reality than HERO5 Silver.

A few things to note, HERO5 Silver will probably never see the calorie-free of the twenty-four hour period, simply HERO5 Superbank did have a settings.json file created, in fact, last FW for HERO5 Silver was 09/12/2016. So, these two may or may not be released but go along a sharp centre on them!

The new HERO5 also supports new update files such as OTAs (which I remember are but patches that are significantly smaller in size) and hold
